a passion for books

As you can probably tell from my various posts and pictures, reading is an integral part of our daily life in our home. My husband and I both love to read, as do our children. Not all children like to read or enjoy listening to stories. Some children see reading as a chore. We’ve been blessed thus far to have children who love to read, and do so voraciously. We realize we are lucky, and that some parents struggle with their children each night to accomplish required reading from school.

While it is not necessary for all children to “love” to read, it sure helps them in school if they at least enjoy reading to some extent.

After talking to so many parents about their children’s objections to reading it really got me thinking about ways families can encourage reading for fun in their homes. I’ve written a list of ways to encourage reading, and hopefully these ideas & activities can help not only children who are struggling, but even children who enjoy reading! Please note though, I am not a reading expert, just a former preschool teacher with a passion for reading.

~ Be a good role model: I find it terribly difficult to find time to read, but I do it anyway. I sneak in a few minutes here and a few minutes there to read. So does Michael, we are both a couple of bookworms. Even if you yourself do not enjoy reading for pleasure consider doing so just to be a good role model for your children. You can read magazines, newspapers, manuals, heck, even the back of the cereal box.
~ Ask your children what they are interested in reading. School required reading might not be something they are interested in. Ask them what they want to read about and then head to your local library or bookstore and help them find the perfect book. Before each trip to the library Max lists the kinds of books he wants to read, almost always non-fiction (coyotes, lightening & baseball this week).
~ Provide books that don’t require reading, such as: picture books, craft books, drawing books, etc. This way they are utilizing books, but don’t have to sit and read if they find that boring.
~ Don’t just stick to the school’s sight word cards, expand upon that by pointing out words in your child’s world. Point out words in the grocery store, on billboards, and anywhere else you might be with your child. You will be surprised how quickly words in their everyday lives become “sight words” for them.
~ Take advantage of your public library. We spend countless hours at our library, where the kids especially enjoy story-time. Check out your local library’s website, they probably have story-time to meet your family’s needs if you have a young child. They even have great programs for older children and adults!
~ Make reading a part of your bedtime routine. As a child I read before bed each night, and still do as an adult. My children love to read before bed. I used to read to them each night, but lately they have been wanting to “read” to themselves. Now I must say, Ella is the only one who can really read…but the boys love this reading time as well. Sam often looks at a “look and find” book, and Max pores over his non-fiction books or his lego catalog. I miss reading to them at night, but love that they are all settling in for the night with a book in hand.

I hope this helps you turn reading into a fun activity instead of a chore! Happy Reading!

Please leave comments below with tips on how you make reading fun at your house, or what your children's favorite books are right now.

eight months old

the dining room table...

...not just for dining.

this week we had alot of downtime while we recovered from illnesses.  much time was spent at the dining room table working on one thing or another.  missed schoolwork was completed, sewing projects got some much needed attention and battles were fought.

a special offer from my etsy shop

I have spent quite a bit of time lately updating my Etsy shop with some new designs, and some old favorites.  Right now I have a special going on.  With every order placed in my Etsy shop you will receive a FREE pack of Mystery Note Cards.  What are Mystery Notes, you ask?  It's a pack of four cards of my choosing, always fun, always cute & always handy to have around when you need to send a note!

I'm working tirelessly to bring snail mail back into style!  So if you or someone you know needs some cute notes please take a moment to peruse my Etsy shop.  I have cards for every occasion.  And if you don't find what you need there you can check out my website:

Note cards make perfect holiday gifts for teachers, friends, siblings, parents, grandparents, long lost cousins, best friends, secretaries, bosses, co-workers, or even children.  And most of my notes can be personalized with someone's name!

down for the count

We  have a large family by today's standards, and we love it.  But having a large family has a few drawbacks.  Going to the movies with four kids costs as much as a day at Disneyworld.  And when a virus strikes, there are mass casualties.  For the past week a strep-like bug has bounced around our house like a pinball. Last Thursday Sam fell ill, then on Sunday Max, Tuesday was Michael and Wednesday was Ella.  Henry and I are the last ones standing.  It's been a week filled with headaches, chills, fevers, sore throats, ear aches, nausea, lethargy and crankiness.
Luckily enough the antibiotics are doing their job quickly, and everyone is on the mend (knock on wood).  I tried to find the positives...more cuddles & lazy pajama days.  Hopefully this weekend when the temperatures drop we can open up these windows and air out the germs!

Mama Odie

Ella brought this masterpiece home from school this week.  Isn't she lovely?  Ella told me that her name is Mama Odie.
When I asked her why she named her that she said it was because she is one crazy looking mama.
Mama Odie now hangs on our kitchen wall.  And I love her.

menu planning monday

as i was getting ready to work on our grocery list for the week this morning i read a blog post by a friend and felt inspired. shannan over at mommy bits made a menu for her family for the week and posted it on her blog. i used to be much better about menu planning for the week, but lately i stink at it. too many dinner times of late have turned into chaos because i didn't have a plan. too many meals have been paid for from restaurants (THREE times last week!). don't get me wrong, i love eating out, but our budget won't allow it too often. and i really do love to cook. i just need to be more organized about it!
i think that another one of my problems is that we are getting bored with the old standby meals. i need to try some new foods on my family...but i don't want to put them into shock, so perhaps one new trial recipe a week.
so today i am totally copying off of shannan (imitation is the most sincere form of flattery my dear). here is my menu plan for this week. i'm leaving off the weekend in hopes that michael will help out, or perhaps we will dine at one of our favorite establishments as a reward for cooking all week. when preparing this menu i tried to find recipes that would make for good lunch leftovers the following days, and every one of these recipes i deem "easy" to prepare.

Monday: Spaghetti Bake - pulled from the deep freeze because hey, it's Monday and I have a sick kid! It was made from scratch, just not today. served with salad, garlic bread & apple slices
Tuesday: Oven Beef & Vegetables - easiest pot roast style meal ever. 1.5 hours to cook! i'm serving with cheesy garlic drop biscuits & fruit (kid's choice).
Wednesday - Zesty Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans & crescent rolls. this is the new recipe i am trying out. believe it or not, i've not made bbq chicken before. and i really need to start using my slow cooker, i've used it twice.
Thurday - dinner with the grandmothers! Salmon (with Honey Teriyaki Sauce - oh my), sauted snap peas, spanish rice and fruit. and if i play my cards right perhaps grandma will bring biscuits. ps...this honey teriyaki sauce is a limited edition find at Tastefully Simple. i buy it in bulk. just for my salmon. it's really that good.
Friday - Sesame Beef Stir Fry with roasted broccoli, steamed rice & fruit (kid's choice). I kind of made this recipe up, and will share the recipe with you later.

ok, so there it is. i wrote it down, so i feel that now i will follow through and make healthy hearty meals for my family all week long. and with the dinner leftovers i will make tasty lunches for them as well. lunch packing is another blog post altogether.
two of the recipes above came from one of my very favorite cookbooks of all time, the big book of casseroles by maryana vollstedt. if you don't have this cookbook i highly recommend you get it. i have so many go-to recipes from this book, and everything i have tried from the book we have enjoyed. the oven beef & vegetable recipe is on page 131 and the spaghetti bake is on page 125. this book is not about your typical casseroles.
another tip i would like to share with you is to become friends with your freezer. stock that baby up! i try to keep aluminum pans on hand for freezing foods. i often double recipes and make as many 9x9 casseroles as i can to throw in the freezer. this is especially helpful during the school year because our weeks get so hectic. this way i can pull something out in the morning and it's thawed by dinner time.
so there you have it, my meal plan for the week. now i need your help. please leave a link below with one of your family's favorite recipes for dinner!

for sam & kate

late last night sam came down with a fever and complained of a headache. He screamed and cried, telling me that it hurt too bad to even sleep. oh my poor baby. it took such a long time for the motrin to kick in. this morning he was still feverish, lethargic, headachey & coughing. after a trip to the doctor's office we came home armed to fight the virus with meds & orders to do breathing treatments to prevent the chest congestion from worsening. the only up side to all of this was all of the cuddling that i got to enjoy today. i've never been so happy to sit and watch transformers & bionicle. while sam napped i worked in the basement looking for books for the yard sale this weekend. that's when i came across this book.
my mother buys the children books each christmas that have their name in the title. this book was bought for sam in 2008. i tend to put these books in a special place so they are not worn out from everyday use. when they get a bit older i start bringing the books out of hiding. i had forgotten all about this book. so i brought it upstairs and read it to sam while he did his breathing treatment tonight. it's a story about a little bear with a cough and he does not want to take his medicine (just like another sam i know).

and when i opened it i saw this inscription. perfect. it was a cozy night indeed!
just a note...i do believe sam is on the mend after a few doses of antibiotics. his fever has subsided, and he was a bit more playful this evening. i was so happy to see the old sam returning.

Old Timer's Day in Rabbit Hash Kentucky

There is no place in the world like Rabbit Hash, Kentucky. It's a tiny little place on the banks of the Ohio River. Blink and you will miss it. The people of Rabbit Hash sure do know how to throw parties. All year long there are barn dances, concerts behind the stove in the general store, and other festivities. Our favorite occasion in Rabbit Hash though is Old Timers Day. It is always a magical day, filled with old cars, great music, flowing beer, carnival games for kids in the barn, good eats, and more. Each year we run into old friends, and make new friends as well. The kids run all over the place and wear themselves out throwing hay, making musical instruments in the barn and dancing to the tunes. My words are not doing justice to this event, or to the city of Rabbit Hash...you will just have to meander down on your own one day to see what I mean. It's a very special place...made even better when they are throwing a party of some sort!  Oh, and did I mention, the mayor of Rabbit Hash is a dog...

Max & the other munchkins take on Jake Speed in a hay fight. Jake lost.
Sam always finds the best seat in the house to watch the tribal dancers.

For more details about how to get to Rabbit Hash, and date of events in Rabbit Hash visit the Rabbit Hash General Store website!

mexican tarts

i have found a new crowd-pleasing recipe to share with you! i call them mexican tarts, but the athens website, where i found the recipe calls them mexican chorizo shells. either way, they are a tasty treat and easy to prepare. i actually made the filling a while back for a party and then froze half of the filling for a baby shower i was throwing this past weekend. when i made the filling i doubled the recipe. then on the day of the party i defrosted, filled the shells, topped with cheese and baked. i love making appetizers ahead of time, to decrease the stress levels on party days. i give this recipe two thumbs up...it's tiny but hearty, and it has quite a kick! i remembered to take a picture of my ingredients (above), but forgot to take pictures as i prepared the shells, and when i was finished, so below you will see some of the snacks we had at the shower this past weekend. notice the mini open face tomato appetizers are there as well.
