Four Kids & a Looooong Car Ride

I'm getting ready for a long car ride with four young children.  And even though my kids are great travelling kids, I always get a bit anxious at the prospect of six of us in the car for so long.  I've been working this week on putting together a bag of fun things for each child, and I think that they are really going to help keep them occupied for several hours.  And if all else fails, I've borrowed a double dvd player from family for the trip.
I'm actually looking forward to the long drive, as a time to do some reading, crocheting and chatting with my husband.  He's been working long hours lately, so time for conversations has been more limited.
Here's a list of some of the things I put together in the kids travelling bags to keep them occupied:
~ Travel Bingo
~ Printable games the kids can play with each other in the car
~ A new magazine for each child (a special treat!)
~ a few small toys
~ snacks (I made trail mix, one of their favorites)
~ water bottles
~ summer journals for documenting the trip
~ magnet board sets
~ a Melissa & Doug Memory Game that my parents gave Ella
~ colored pencils and paper
~ sometimes for really long trips I might buy each child a small new toy or book to open up while we are on the drive.  It's amazing how entertaining a new item can be.

Once you get to your destination these items can be a great distraction on a rainy day.  And when we get home, I keep many of the items on this list in a special box, and only take them out for travelling, so the kids don't get to see them very often...which makes them seem like something new!

What are your tips for keeping kids occupied for a long drive?

and ps...I do not travel with my children sitting on top of pillows and blankets while we drive.  the above picture was taken on "pack-up" day after camping all weekend.  max had no interest in packing up.

Getting Organized :: Miscellaneous Memorabilia

I'm a pack rat.  So is Michael.  So are our children.  So as you can imagine, we have alot of random odds & ends all over the house.  We save every ticket stub, birthday party invitation, playbill, wedding program and other miscellaneous memorabilia you can think of!  For a while I was just stuffing it all into a box.  But I wanted a better way to organize it.  So I bought a photo box to store all of the playbills &  programs.
Then I bought a scrapbook at Michael's to hold all of our saved tickets & memorabilia.

I used scrap-booking adhesive to attach all of our "treasures" in the book.  I think it's fun to look at, and hope that someday our kids enjoy looking through them.  Hopefully they will appreciate all of the cool memorabilia their mother preserved.

Am I crazy, or do you save things like this as well?

my brudder

While going through a box of old photos recently I stumbled upon this scrap of newspaper written about me and my new baby brudder.  It makes me smile.  I do believe I might have even asked my mom when they were going to take him back.  But that attitude didn't last long.  We became pals eventually.
Over the years we had our ups and downs as any sibs do...there were times when he resisted my affections (we'll just call it my schoolteacher-in-training phase), and times when we teased each other mercilessly.  But in my heart I always knew that my brother would do anything for me.  That's what I love most about him now, the strong knowledge that he's got my back should I ever call on him.  My little "brudder" is now much taller than me, he's always good for a laugh, and he can liven up any party with his wit & his charm.  He's a very classy & smart guy and I'm proud to be his big sis.

Ok, that's enough.  He's probably rolling his eyes at me now for my ramblings.  And should my sister be reading this..take heed, I'm looking for the perfect picture to complete your post!

Menu Plan Monday ~ In Reverse ~ June 27

I am participating in Menu Plan Monday at orgjunkie.com, but unlike most of the other participants who plan their menus and post them that week, I'm always a bit behind, and I post my menus a week later. I do this so that I can let you know if I try a new recipe and it's not that great. I don't want to blog about a recipe if it's no good. Participating in MPM has inspired me to find new recipes for my family, and I hope that when you read this post you can find new recipes for your family!

Here's our menu from last week!

Monday ~ Father's Day Dinner with my family: Steak, Salad, Herb Roasted Potatoes, Green Beans & More

This summer I am doing my best to take steps to get more organized...in every area of our lives. Except cleaning. Still waiting on a house elf for that one. Some of the changes I'm making are huge, some are tiny, but in the end, they are all helping to make our lives feel a little less chaotic. I want to share my ideas with you over the summer, in the hopes that you will find inspiration for organizing, or perhaps share some organizing ideas with me in the comments section!

Just look at this mess!  It's what my desk (ahem, dining room table) looks like on a daily basis!  I've got bills, my calendar, a binder stuffed full of random papers, old pictures to upload, no less than 15 stray lists, my wallet, my ipod, etc. You get the picture...in fact, I'm willing to bet (or at least I am hoping) that I'm not the only one out there with this chaotic kind of desk.  Figuring out a better system for organizing our somewhat hectic lives was a top priority for me this summer.  I wanted to take that binder you see there buried under all of the paper and clean it up to make it more useful.  By the way, as I continue to work on this summer organizational series you will notice a common theme...I'm ADDICTED to binders.  I find them to be ever so helpful.  First I gathered my supplies: my binder and two sets of tab dividers for the binder (I had a lot of "sections" I wanted to develop to get organized).
And I also bought a cool set of tab dividers with pockets! These have been super helpful for sorting out all of my "stuff" - the bills, important papers, etc.

My next step was to search etsy.com for a kit to help me organize the binder.   I stumbled upon Life on Purpose's store.  Life on Purpose is a store started by Shannan, a fellow crafty mama who authors the blog: It's Not Always Black & White.  I love her funny stories about her family, tales of their adventures & ideas for fun craft projects (and recipes!).  I purchased from her store a "Household Organizational Notebook Printable Pages" for $5.  It was a PDF that she emailed to me lickety split.  The file contains 23 printable pages to help get yourself organized (perfect for list addicts like myself).  Included are:  An Outline; Weekly Planner; Weekly To-Do List; Weekend To-Do List; Master To-Do List; Family Member Info Sheet (so helpful to have around, in case of an emergency, or for babysitters!); Pet Info Sheet (I should point out here, that you don't necessarily have to use all of the printable pages...only those you need!); Birthdays and Anniversaries List; Home Storage Inventory List; Movie Inventory (I will never again forget who I loaned a movie to!); Movie Wish List; Book Inventory; Book Wish List; Party Planning Guide; Party Guest list; Dinner Menu Plan; Favorite Recipes (Great way to remember which cookbook your favorite recipes are in!); Recipes to Try; Important Phone Numbers; Contact List.  Lists, lists, lists!  I was in heaven when I received the PDF!  Since I purchased my kit, she has also added an itemized grocery list & recipe page to her shop.
The "Master To-Do" list has been my best friend these past few weeks.  I printed several...a master list for me, a master list for Michael, a master list for summer fun (ie: the bucket list) and a master list of projects I want need to complete this summer.
Here's a few more sample pages...I took these pix the day I got the kit, so they are not blank anymore ;)

I love this kit.  I love it so much I emailed Shannon to ask her if she could share some goodies with my readers, and she agreed!  She gave me FIVE sets of the "Household Organizational Notebook Printable Pages" to give to five lucky winners AND she gave me a discount code for her shop to share with my readers!  And please note, her shop is not limited to lists and such!  She has hair bows for little girls, art work, tutus, and other cool stuff!
So run, don't walk to the Life on Purpose etsy store and check out all of her cool items, and if you feel like shopping (those bows & tutus would make great gifts for any little girl in your life) then use the special code to get 20% off!  LITTLETHINGS20 ~ this code will give you 20% off anything in her store!

Now...on to the exciting stuff...everyone loves a giveaway!

teething

poor prince henry is teething, AGAIN.  it seems that when he teethes they come in large numbers.  i've had a number of people ask me about his necklace.  it is baltic amber, and it is supposed to relieve pain associated with teething.  i've been asked repeatedly if i think it works, and the answer is yes.  i was skeptical at first, but so many friends were singing the praises of the amber necklaces, and i was willing to try anything to make teething easier for him.  right now he has at least 3 teeth coming in (he doesn't let me in there to check things out very often).  he can get a little cranky sometimes, and that might be due to the teeth coming in, but i have not had to give him meds at all because of the teething.  when his first two teeth came in (before we bought the necklace) it was a nightmare, and he cried for two days straight.  so comparing that experience to this one, i'd have to say the amber is soothing him.  i found his necklace on etsy, but I know that you can also find them at Toko Kidz in Clifton and Park+Vine in Cincinnati and other shops.  these necklaces are for wearing, not for chewing, and even if they aren't relieving pain (which i believe it is) - it's still a cute little necklace, for a boy or a girl.  let me know if you use these beads, and what you think about them!

beyond books ~ raindrop mobile

Yesterday afternoon was dark & stormy, and that kind of weather called for some book reading & crafting.  So first I collected a bunch of books about weather for the kids to read.

The craft I picked was inspired by a Cloud Mobile post I saw on Crafty Crow.  I had trouble printing the images from the post, so I created my own using clip art.  Another option would be to have the kids draw their own clouds and raindrops, but I knew that Sam would be frustrated by this, so I made printables.
For this project you need paper for the cloud & raindrops (or printables), yarn, tape, scissors & crayons (the kids drew designs & wrote words on their clouds and raindrops).

First they cut out the raindrops and clouds (great for fine motor skills)

Then they taped their raindrops to yarn they attached to the cloud.  Ella loved using the masking tape.

These aren't great depictions of their finished products...Max's is backwards, on the front he had written "bam boom rumble" for the thunder, and Sam had drawn lightening on his.  Sam got frustrated with the cutting, so his raindrops are square.  He did not want any help from Mama, he wanted square raindrops.
This was a great craft, quite uncomplicated, and gave the munchkins something to distract themselves while I made dinner.

Getting Organized :: The Recipe Binder

This summer I am doing my best to take steps to get more organized...in every area of our lives.  Except cleaning.  Still waiting on a house elf for that one.  Some of the changes I'm making are huge, some are tiny, but in the end, they are all helping to make our lives feel a little less chaotic.  I want to share my ideas with you over the summer, in the hopes that you will find inspiration for organizing, or perhaps share some organizing ideas with me in the comments section!

Getting Organized :: The Recipe Binder

Until last month my recipes were a jumble.  I had a recipe box, and the recipes that were on larger pieces of paper were haphazardly stuck into a binder.  And I had a rather large collection of recipes I wanted to try at some point but had forgotten about because they were crammed in the back of the crazy-messy binder.  I needed to figure out some way to clean it all up and make it more user-friendly.  I started to look for a recipe binder.  I know I could make my own, but I wanted something nice that would hold up well in my kitchen, and big enough to hold all of my recipes.  I found just what I was looking for on Amazon.

I adore this binder.  It was just under $30, and the price tag made me hem and haw abit before purchasing, but I'm so glad I decided to do it.  I think it is well worth the cost because it condensed all of my favorite recipes into one place.  It comes with lots of features.

12 tabbed dividers (Brunch, Side Dish, Appetizer, Salads, Main Course, etc)

It also came with cute 5x7 recipe cards and plastic pocket pages to hold them (I also ordered replacement plastic pocket pages because I had soooooo many recipe cards).  I love this system so much more than my recipe box!  And by the way, I took this opportunity to ditch some recipes, those that just weren't keeping were pitched.

The binder also came with 8.5x11 plastic sheet protectors, which I used to store my full-page recipes, and I used a few to seperate all of my "need to try these" recipes.  I made a section for main dishes, side dishes, desserts, etc.  I have found this much easier to go through when I am looking for a new dish to try.

The binder also had this clasped folder in the back.  I use it to store my top secret recipes ;)

I have found meal-planning to be much easier since I organized my countless recipes into one big binder.  And I think that this binder is going to hold up well over the years so that I can pass it on to one of my children when they are old enough to start cooking for me.

How do you organize your recipes?

**disclaimer:  this is not a paid advertisement.  the company has no idea i am raving about them, i am not getting compensation.  i just love my new recipe binder!

radish dip

Last week we received our first shipment from Rains & Son Backyard Farm's CSA, which was started by my sweet cousin and her husband (and son).  I was so excited, and most of the food was gobbled up immediately (especially the sugar snap peas, my favorite!).  But there were a few veggies in there that I hadn't really used for cooking before.  One of them was radishes.  I've had radishes in salads here and there, but I've never cooked with them.  Anna gave me a recipe for radish dip with the veggies, and I tweaked it based on the ingredients I had on hand.  You should try this dip, it's so tasty!

Radish Dip

8 oz. Cream Cheese, softened
2 Tbs. Mayonnaise
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 cup radishes (chopped finely)
¼ cup chopped green onions
2 heaping tablespoons minced garlic
½ tsp. Kosher salt

Mix all ingredients well, chill for a few hours, then enjoy with chips & pretzels, or veggies.

happy father's day!

last month i told you how much i adore the mothers in my life, and now i want to tell you about the fabulous fathers i've had in my life.
let me tell you about my husband michael, the father of our four children.  he is a fun, hands-on kind of dad.  he takes every opportunity he can to create learning experiences for our kids, whether it be to teach them about the many plants growing in and around our house, or pulling a chair up to the counter so they can cook alongside him.  he is ever watchful, striving to keep them out of harms way.  he encourages them to be independent & creative problem solvers.  i can't tell you how much i appreciate how hard he works to provide for us so that i can stay home and be with them instead of working.  when he comes home at the end of a long hard day i can tell just by looking at him sometimes that he is exhausted.  yet somehow he always manages to muster up the energy to have fun with the kids.  and in the evening when it is time for bed, he will drop what he is doing to spend a few quiet minutes reading with them.  he doesn't have a t-shirt or tie yet that says this, but he really is a #1 Dad!

then there is my daddio...a girl couldn't have asked for a better dad.  he is a great listener, a great dancer, and a great friend.  he is brilliant, patient, kind and loving.  he believes in me, and encourages me to live life to the fullest.  he is generous in every sense of the word...not just generous financially or in terms of physical objects, but he is also generous with his love, his friendship, his support, his time, and his energy.  he will do anything for his family, and also for his friends & his community.  and whenever he is around, you know you are going to have a good time, because he is so fun-loving and adventurous.  because of my dad i will always enjoy dancing in the kitchen, driving on old country roads, listening to opera, travelling to new places, trying new foods, and learning obscure facts about kentucky history.  i love you dad, and i am proud to be your daughter.
and i also think that he is a fantastic papa, and if you don't believe me, just ask henry.

then there is the other dad in my life, michael's father charlie.  he is so wise, kind and always happy.  he was such an awesome dad to michael and his brother as they were growing up...he taught them so many things over the years, and because of it they are all insanely smart men.  i didn't mean to use past tense in my last sentance, he's still an awesome dad, and even though the boys have grown and moved away from home, he is still a constant support for them, helping them with projects and helping them figure out any kind of problem they encounter.  i married into the greatest family, they can fix anything, and they can figure out any kind of problem imaginable.  not to mention the fact that charlie is a fun guy, a cool grandpa & the best father-in-law around.

and last, but not least, i want to take a minute just to tell you about my grandfathers.

i didn't really get a chance to know my grandpa sam.  he died when i was a babe.  but from the stories i have heard he sounded like he could be a fun-loving guy, and i think that this trait was passed on to my father.  and it was from grandpa sam that my children have inherited their musical inclinations.  i wish i had been able to spend more time with him.

this here is my bop-bop, he passed away in 1998.  i loved him dearly, and still miss him so very much.  he spoiled me and my cousins rotten over the years...taking us to fancy restaurants (and to chuck-e-cheese), introducing us to costly seafood dishes & shirley temples, letting us go wild in johnny's at christmas-time and then "delivering" the toys we picked out to santa.  he also took me on some very exciting vacations.  the best of which was my first trip overseas at the age of 12.  he & nana took me to england and ireland, i learned so much, saw so many things, and spent time with our lovely cousins...it is a trip i will never forget.
my best bop memories took place on saturdays though.  every saturday from the time that i was very small i would spend the day with my bop-bop.  he would take me to his office to "work"  ie: sharpen pencils, or he would take me to the farm to visit the cows.  we would also go to lunch, and then back to the house to visit with nana.  i treasured this time with him, and when i was old enough, i began working in his office "for real".  it was my first real job, and i had so much fun there.  i loved being around him, and i could tell that he loved having me around.  i was his "deedle dee", and there will never be a bop-bop quite like him.

who does henry look like?

Everyone is always asking me this..."Who does Henry look like?".  And I never know quite what to say.  I think he looks alot like Ella did as a baby, but as you can see...he's got a little bit of everyone mixed in there!

What do you think?
